History

Twenty years before the 1849 gold rush to Calif, thousands of gold seekers flocked into the Cherokee Nation in what is now North Georgia, beginning the nation's first major gold rush. Today Dahlonega relates the history of the period with exhibits.

Culture, History, Historic House

At the Davenport House visitors glimpse into the American past when the nation was new and Isaiah Davenport, a young carpenter from New England, achieved success as a builder in his adopted city. The world of early 19th century Savannah is presented through the outstanding Federal-style home Davenport built for his household. Furnished as it would have been in the 1820s, the museum is an authentic period restoration.

Historical Society

The museum is in storage, so it currently has no physical address. Plans are in progress to reopen museum this fall in former original post office now headquarters for school board.

Art

The Old Courthouse on the square is the oldest "working" courthouse in Georgia. The court room is open to the public. The lobby features three cabinet displays of artifacts

The Jim Cherry Museum is operated by DHS is a three room local history musuem located in an 1898 courthouse, featuring 100 years of Dekalb's history.

The mission of the Double Eagle Heritage Collection is to collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit objects, images and artifacts related to the history, heritage, and traditions of the U.S. Army Reserve and the Federal Citizen Soldier.

The Dunwoody Nature Center is a nonprofit organization established to develop, improve, and preserve Dunwoody Park as a natural classroom for environmental education. The park is open sun-up to sundown, seven days a week, free of charge.
