The Big Black Creek Historical Association, Inc. was formed to identify, preserve, and promote historical and cultural sites within eastern Haywood and western Madison Counties in Tennessee including the communities of Denmark, Leighton, Mercer, and Woodland. Restoration of the Denmark Presbyterian Church is underway with a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and Madison County. Neglected family cemeteries are being restored and readings published for genealogists searching for family roots. A driving tour is being developed, and guided tours are available on request. Originally settled by farmers looking for better land to grow cotton, many farms have remained in the same family over 100 years.

The Tennessee Historical Commission provides management over site and the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association (GJSMA for short) is a local organization which runs the daily operation of the park. The GJSMA is also in charge of the numerous ongoing restoration projects around the park, not only to keep and maintain the exciting eight historical buildings, but to expand when possible the other buildings and workshops of John Sevier’s time.

TVRM’s passenger trains run on the historic route which includes Missionary Ridge Tunnel, completed in 1858 and on the National Register of Historic Places. The tunnel is the primary reason TVRM runs on the three-mile section of the former Southern Railway. As railroad equipment grew too large to pass through and the single-track tunnel became a traffic jam for an other wise double-track railroad, Southern Railway abandoned the three mile portion of the line and built a new section around the end of Missionary Ridge, avoiding the tunnel altogether.
