During the Civil War Union armies set out to capture Richmond and repeatedly came within a few miles of the city. The park commemorates eleven sites associated with those campaigns, including Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, Fort Harrison, and Drewrey's Bluff.
